日初漆藝的日常 ／ Daily of Sunrise-Lacquer
In a weekend afternoon, Ming-Zong just cleaned his studio. The studio locates in San-Chong, Taipei, next to the studio is a busy traditional market, it returns to a calm street in the afternoon. Here is the place for students to learn about lacquer craft and also where they create lacquer works.
Sunrise-Lacquer use resin of lacquer tree - Urushi to paint objects, let lacquer craft blends into daily life. Taiwan is lacking of information about lacquer craft recently, Ming-Zong said that’s because the changing of lifestyle let the lacquer industry has a gap. The biggest industry before of using lacquer is surprisingly the coffin industry. So they are working hard to promote lacquer craft to let more people know about the beauty of this traditional craft.

Why you choose lacquer craft?
I studied crafts, basically I learn most of the craft techniques. I knew about lacquer painting when i did woodworking, I thought how could there has such an interesting coating material. It could use as food container, acid and corrosion proof, withstand temperature to 178℃, it’s really interesting.
I thought about to choose which crafts as my future direction. I started a series comparison, woodworking, ceramics, glass etc. I like ceramics a lot when I studied at school, but when I thought about that there are too many competitors in the market, I decided to choose lacquer craft this specific Asian Culture as my direction.
How you present lacquer craft?
Lacquer is not only a coating, it could also present with painting, it’s very interesting. After put on the beautiful coating on the object, you could use imagination to decorate it. At first I wanted to do the extremely polish surface to present the quality of lacquer. After I had more experience, I found more ways for presentation, it could be matte, it doesn’t has to be flat, it could make quality, it could do repairing of ceramics. Urushi can paint on any kind of material, on the contrary, any kind of material can mount into the lacquer.
The direction of your development?
I have two directions, one is personal creation, the other is product. Personal creation needs a lot of time, and it has limitation for people to know about lacquer craft. So we develop some products which have value for collection, like calligraphy, tea, ikebana these activities which full of cultural connotation. Let more people know about lacquer.

What’s your ideal leisure life?
We look forward to the studios in middle south or east coast. I studied lacquer craft at my teacher’s studio in Hua-Lian for three months. The environment there is really good, it’s not that humid and cold like Taipei, the breeze is very comfortable there. We regularly visit my teacher’s place two to three times a year, actually it’s to have a vacation.
